Peace Gardens

The Burton Street Community Peace Gardens were founded in 2003 by husband and wife pair DeWayne Barton & Safi Mahaba at a time when the community was confronting drug trafficking, crime and the I-26 Connector expansion.  With permission from the owners, they cleaned off a vacant lot on Bryant Street and started growing veggies for the community in a few small raised beds.

Since those first years, an army of community volunteers and neighborhood youth have worked to nurture and expand these gardens into the abundant network that now serves our neighborhood.

We had an amazing year in 2011 and wanted to share some of the beauty and bounty of the gardens…check out our photo album below!
