Many of our local churches host Watch Night services to ring in the new year. It’s a proud and deeply rooted tradition that let’s us count the blessings of this past year, reckon with those things we wish to let go, then free ourselves of limitations as we imagine a new year filled with possibility.
For the Burton Street Community, the blessings of 2011 are worth mentioning.
In early 2011, we continued implementation of our newly developed neighborhood plan by hosting our annual Martin Luther King, Jr. Day of Service. A crew of Americorp members and community volunteers braved the chilly weather to start the clean-up of Smith Mill Creek on the northern border of the Burton Street Community. (Stay tuned for info about this years Day of Service!)
Starting in early Spring, the Peace Gardens held their first annual seed & plant sales. Enough funds were raised to pay for much needed greenhouse supplies and the spring & summer seed purchase. Many thanks to the community for their love & support!
As Summer drew near, Luke Perry & Asheville Design Center launched the area’s first Design-Build Studio. Building on the ideas of re-use and re-purposing found throughout the community, a group of college students (lead by Luke Perry) designed and built a unique and functional outdoor learning center overlooking the Peace Gardens. Since completion, the project has garnered national attention: check out this article!
And, we hope you were all with us at this year’s Burton Street Agriculture Fair and Farmer’s Jubilee. We had such a good time. Consider helping out this year!
As 2011 drew to a close, a dedicated group of folks put some finishing touches on plans for a technology center and solar panel installation imagined at The Burton Street Recreation Center. Asheville Design Center continues to be a treasured community partner and we look forward to closer ties and exciting projects as 2012 unfolds.
We welcome 2012 and are eager to continue the great works of our community! We welcome newcomers, bid farewell to those who are leaving, and create closer and closer ties between neighbors.
REMEMBER: Community meetings are the 3rd Monday of each month at 6 pm. All meetings are held at the Burton Street Recreation Center, unless otherwise posted. Hope to see you there!
